Box Brief

Congrats Peter!

1. When and how did you get started with us?
My son Mike was a very good high school athlete, and started doing crossfit when he got to college as a way to still compete in sports. He invited me to a “Bring a friend” day about three years ago. I admit that I went mostly as an excuse to hang out with him. I had worked out before (anyone else remember Tony Horton and P90X? do your best, and forget the rest…), but I was hooked after one workout. I did elements with Harry, who guaranteed me that I’d have a body just like his as soon as I joined CFNE. Still waiting dude.

2. Favorite workout?/Least favorite workout?
My favorite workouts are the Saturday team workouts. As everyone knows, one of the best parts of crossfit is the community, and one of the (many) things Ben has done really well is create such a positive, fun, inclusive environment. Whether I’m working out with my regulars (shout out to grumpy John G and part-time Scotty), or meet a totally new group, I’m struck by what a great cast of characters we have at CFNE. And I’m also amazed at how well “group misery” works as a motivator. As far as least favorite workouts, I’ve found that there’s an inverse relationship between pain and workout time. In other words, I’ll often look at a WOD (the night before, when I religiously look for the post at 6:31pm every damn night), and I think “this one is short. Doesn’t seem too bad”, and bam, it crushes me.

3. What’s the wallpaper on your phone right now?
My phone wallpaper says “do more things that make you forget to check your phone”.

4. What’s in your most frequently used emoji tab?

Clearly, I like to play golf, lift weights, and curl, while eating burgers in the rain.

5. What’s your favorite CFNE tradition?
I love the “12 days of Crossfit, or Christmas” workout on Christmas eve. It’s always mayhem, and people are working out like maniacs in one section of the gym, and chugging beers and doing Patron Cafe tequila shots in another part of the gym. What’s better than that before a long day with family and Christmas Eve Mass? Nothing.

6. What genre of music would you be?
Why cool jazz of course. (I can hear the collective groans and eye rolls from the 6:30am class. Thank you all for keeping me humble.)

7. What’s the last thing you searched for on Google?
Elon Musk and SpaceX. See below!

8. What’s your favorite cheat food?
Chocolate dipped in chunky peanut butter.

9. What superpower would you want to possess?
Not sure if this is considered a superpower, but time travel. I’m a history buff, so would love to see what it was like in the time of the Roman Empire, the Vikings, etc. Then I’d love to get a glimpse of what’s in store for us in the future. Also I’d check myself out in the future to see when I actually look like Harry Palley.

10. If you could travel anywhere outside of this planet, where would you go and why?
This is the part where I’m supposed to mention Star Wars or Star Trek, but honestly, there are so many awesome places on my bucket list on our Blue Marble (The Galapagos Islands. Southeast Asia. The Grand Canyon!) that I’d rather go to. We’ve all heard Ben, and others, point out that the happiest people focus on relationships, and experiences, rather than things. My best memories are from sharing experiences, and places, with my family and friends. And since I can’t afford to fly the family on Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket (partly because my daughter would demand a first class seat) I’d rather be here, with them.
