Early Reflections of the Open

In the months leading up to the Open, CrossFit coaches encourage their athletes to register and compete. It’s CrossFit’s largest community event, where tens of thousands of athletes around the world get together to participate in five online workouts. By design, the Open has a reputation of testing relatively simple and commonly-used CrossFit movements, bringing the beginner and advanced CrossFitter into the same competition.

For 99% of us, it’s like a 5K race. We don’t sign up to win the whole thing, but rather to get in on the experience. The buildup, the preparation, and the “game-day” push drives us to a new level, and often results in breaking through pre-conceived limits or expectations. That alone makes the Open worth it’s weight in gold. For just a few dollars to register, it’s completely worth it.

A few weeks ago, a group of us got together to watch the announcement of the first 2014 Open Workout. We always try to guess, and we always are way off (maybe that’s just me though). AMRAP 10 of 30 Double-Unders and 15 Snatches. A classic CrossFit couplet that will surely challenge every athlete. For competitors to advance to week 2 of the competition, all they had to do was log a single rep inside of the 10 minute AMRAP.

The issue however was that the first movement inside the workout was the double-under. And if you had yet to get your first double-under, you were at risk of being disqualified from the Open right off the bat. For many, this was a very discouraging thought.

Initially, I too was frustrated hearing this announcement. We have several athletes in our gym who were still working for that first double-under, and if they wanted to participate in the Open, they only had a four days to make it happen. If only the movement order in the workout was just flipped, with the 15 Snatches coming first, it would be far easier on the beginner athletes to push into week two. But it was not the case. We now had to perform that double-under to move on.

What at first gave me a sense of frustration, I now view as a blessing in disguise. The challenge is what pushed athletes to find what they had not believed they could accomplish before. Karen Hayes, Tricia D’Agostino, Lisa Landau, Stephan Braun and Joe Doherty all got their first double-under. Along with our athletes, there are bound to be hundreds more that found this first as well on 14.1.

Fast forward to week two, where the second Open workout involved medium weight overhead squats and chest-to-bar pull-ups… both challenging movements, and tied to an even more challenging rep scheme. Nearly a dozen of our athletes drove themselves to their first ever chest-to-bar pull-up.

The Open has been a reminder that we are capable of so much more than we think. Adversity is an opportunity to build strength, and what I appreciate so much about the CrossFit community is the willingness to take challenge head on.

At the time of writing this, we don’t know what the next Open workout is. Regardless of what it may be, it’s a challenge, an opportunity, that we can embrace. Let’s see what we can do with it.

    My goal was to make it to the cleans so I was happy. The WB were surprisingly not as awful as I thought but the TTB were a challenge. I def know what to work on!

  2. 14.4 : 60 Rx(101 scaled)= 161 reps total. KBS with 18# instead of TTB, WB with 8#, cleans with 55#

    TTB were a disaster. Made it off the rower in sub 3 min with plenty of gas in the tank, but my toes just didn’t want to go up to that bar. They’re something i used to work on a lot, but haven’t been doing much at all lately. Time to change that.

    First time doing 14# wall balls! Was pretty happy getting through more than half of them last night! Continuing my streak of PRing in every Open workout this year :)
